Anthropic details text watermarking for three Claude models: what detection can establish
November 3 model guidance · August mechanism explainer · current documents checked November 5 JST
Summary
Anthropic’s November 3 notes describe text watermarking for three Claude models. Text marks, file credentials and delivery routes offer clues to processing, with limits on authorship and accuracy judgments.
A signal that AI generated or edited text needs to be read alongside its production history. On November 3, Claude developer Anthropic added release-note guidance on text watermarking for three models. The useful question is what the marks and a detection result can establish.
Key facts
The November 3 platform notes say text from Mythos 5, Opus 4.7 and Sonnet 4.6 carries the watermark on listed platforms. Sonnet 4.6 output may lack it when certain settings governing generation choices differ from their defaults. This is not the first announcement of watermarking: the explanatory article was published on August 14. Platform release notes
When checked November 5 JST, the help page scheduled completion of Amazon Bedrock rollout for those three models by November 10. Bedrock is an Amazon cloud route for accessing AI. Text detection remains a private preview for eligible organizations; a general user cannot assume immediate access to the detection API. Coverage and detection guidance

1. A pattern in the choices that make a sentence
An AI repeatedly chooses what comes next in a sentence. When several expressions are similarly appropriate, there is room to choose. Anthropic describes using a rule for those choices, then checking the accumulated pattern across a passage. How the watermark works
“The meeting takes place this afternoon” and “This afternoon, the meeting takes place” can convey the same schedule. These invented sentences illustrate room for choice; they are not an actual watermark rule or detection sample. The developer says its mark adds no hidden characters or extra tokens and contains no identifying information about the user, organization or conversation. Text watermark documentation

Can I spot the pattern by reading one sentence?
Pocket NotebookIt is not a search for hidden characters by eye. A keyed tool examines signals from multiple choices, and short passages or exact-answer text leave less evidence. That also differs from general AI detectors judging spelling or writing style.
2. Text patterns and a file's provenance label
The text watermark is part of word selection. Files can instead carry Content Credentials following C2PA, an open standard for signed provenance metadata. Metadata is descriptive information stored with a file; a credential can record processing involvement.
A Claude-issued credential on a supported file such as PNG or JPEG supplies a signal that Claude processed it. Copying text and re-saving a file can affect different kinds of evidence, so first identify which mark a tool checked.
| Mark or record examined | Where it lives | Limit after transfer or editing |
|---|---|---|
| Text watermark | Pattern in generated word choices | May survive some editing; short or heavily changed text is harder to detect |
| C2PA file credential | Signed provenance metadata attached to the file | May disappear through re-saving, conversion or screenshots |
| Visible sources and work records | Records linked to the manuscript or file | Still require a connection to the original and actual work |

What should I obtain if I received only a screenshot?
Pocket NotebookRequest the original file and its conversion history. That gives you material to check format support and whether re-saving removed metadata. Non-detection alone cannot prove exclusively human creation.
3. Check the model and the delivery route
The name Claude covers different models and access routes. Coverage depends on the exact model and whether it is used through a Claude app, the API or a cloud partner. An API lets another program send requests to the model and receive responses.
The Sonnet 4.6 exception names temperature, top_p and top_k, settings that adjust generation choices. Developers relying on the watermark are told to omit all three, including values inserted by a framework or client library.

What should our organization check before using detection?
Pocket NotebookEstablish eligibility, access approval and the supported content scope first. The help page describes eligible media, research and educational organizations, plus enterprises with relevant obligations; the form registers interest. Test the detection workflow within the access actually approved.
4. When Claude edits a person's draft
Consider a fictional newsletter whose author asks Claude to proofread or translate a human-written draft. A detected mark can indicate involvement in processing. It does not reconstruct who first supplied the ideas, research or every sentence.
Light proofreading may leave a weak signal because Claude selected few words; a complete translation can involve many more selections. Even then, detection does not determine factual accuracy, authorship and ownership together. A recipient can compare the original draft, revision history and cited material to investigate those questions more concretely.
| Fictional production record | Question detection cannot settle alone | Material to obtain |
|---|---|---|
| Light editing of a person's draft | Which content was original and which was edited? | Before-and-after manuscripts |
| Full translation by Claude | What research supports the original claims? | Original, sources and translation review |
| Later editing or excerpts | Which parts remain in the received text? | Original and editing or excerpt history |

Which records help explain a person's role when they commission editing or translation?
Pocket NotebookObtain before-and-after drafts, original sources and a description of the assigned task. Separating localized edits from a full translation helps trace the research and claims the person supplied. The detection signal adds one clue to that work history.

Another clue to a document's history
Watermarks add evidence for tracing AI involvement. Keeping the applicable model/platform scope alongside production records helps identify which question a detection result answers and which questions remain open.
