OpenAI reports Astra device design and automotive research: who made the prototype?
Research announcement dated November3 · originals checked November4 JST
Summary
OpenAI described Astra-assisted device design and manufacturing research on November 3. The design, manufacturing review, prototype and BenchCAD results mark different stages and evidence.
A design file on a screen is one part of making a physical component. On November 3, OpenAI described an Astra-designed test device and research collaborations with automotive and hardware teams. Separating design outputs, manufacturing review and the prototype reveals what work the AI performed.
Key facts
OpenAI says it used its Astra model to design a test device for talking to Codex. Two team members worked on the design as a side project in under a week; a contract manufacturer made a small prototype batch in under a month. This publication has not built or tested the device. The announcement also discusses internal hardware work, BenchCAD 2.0 and collaborations with Chip Ganassi Racing and Mazda. The Mazda research is expected to produce further reports. This is not an announcement of a retail device or a new manufacturing feature for every account.

1. AI design and the manufacturer's work
A device needs an enclosure, a circuit board connecting components, and operating software. A circuit board places electronic components in specified positions and connects them. An attractive enclosure can still be difficult to manufacture if parts do not fit or assembly requirements are wrong.
OpenAI says Astra created appearance and internal supports, selected and connected board components, and produced the interface and software integrations. The experiment aimed to avoid direct human edits to design outputs, but preparing for manufacturing still required review and repeated iteration. The model did not consistently incorporate production limits, dimensional tolerances or assembly details. Tolerance is how much a real part's dimensions may vary while still fitting and working.

Can I send it straight to a factory when the AI says the design is finished?
Pocket NotebookThe manufacturer needs material to review dimensions, materials, components and assembly. This example still involved several rounds of review and iteration. Connect what was reviewed to the actual state of the prototype received.
2. What the evaluation score measures
Computer-aided design, or CAD, handles component shapes and dimensions. The announced BenchCAD 2.0 evaluates reconstruction of 3D parts and assemblies and identification of circuit-board connections. That tests design-related work, rather than measuring the full manufacturing outcome, such as product life, crash safety or production yield.
OpenAI reports the following averages. It does not name the newer internal model or establish outside-access terms in this announcement. Compare these as the reported evaluation scores; their difference is not a manufacturing-success rate.
| Model in BenchCAD 2.0 | Reported average score | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| GPT-6 Astra, highest reasoning setting | 0.594 | The evaluation's comparison model |
| Newer internal model | 0.875 | Internal-model result in the same announcement |
| Difference | 0.281 | 0.875 − 0.594, a score difference |

- The researcher
Does the higher internal-model score become the score of the Astra I use?
Pocket NotebookKeep the two models separate. An internal-model result does not establish that your account's model changed. Record the selected model, design tools and review results for the actual task.
3. Turning an existing part into editable drawings
Collaborator Chip Ganassi Racing is a motorsport team. The announcement describes testing a workflow from scans of existing parts to editable CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings. A scan captures an existing shape; editable design material lets engineers change dimensions and geometry for further production. It targets work where the original design files are unavailable.
The new Mazda research collaboration explores and evaluates vehicle designs with the carmaker's aerodynamics and crash-safety engineers. OpenAI says further results will follow. This table connects the described outputs to human review; it is not this publication's verification of vehicle performance or safety.
The announcement seeks engineering and manufacturing collaborators. Its linked form invites a small number of software companies to bring a concrete failure case, a success criterion, domain experts, a secure testing environment and data suitable for research. Expressing interest does not itself supply a product feature or access. Research collaboration invitation

- The researcher
As a non-developer commissioning design work, what should I receive?
Pocket NotebookAsk for editable design files, manufacturing drawings and the reviewed conditions alongside a polished image. If the assignment includes a physical object, obtain the prototype and dimensional or functional checks too. Outputs matching the assigned stage let the next provider continue the work.

A result that can move toward production
The announcement extends AI work from text and code into physical-product design. Using those results requires a connected account of who handled the design, manufacturing review and prototype, and what material they delivered.
