Google previews Genie 4, generating scenes and sound that respond to user control
Google announcement October 27 · developer originals checked October 28 JST
Summary
Google DeepMind announced Genie 4 on October 27. The world model generates scenes, sound and dialogue in response to user control. Access is limited to trusted testers, with subscriber and developer availability still planned.
Imagine walking through a harbor on screen and asking for rain, with the scene and sound changing together. That is the interaction targeted by Genie 4, announced on October 27 by Google’s AI research organization, DeepMind. It is currently a research preview for a limited group of trusted testers.
Key facts
Genie 4 is a world model that generates a virtual environment in response to input and control. Google says users can change weather, cameras and characters with natural language while it runs, with ambient sound, music and character dialogue generated alongside the scene. Sound generation within that process is a focus of the announcement. Google announcement
Access has begun for trusted testers. Google says availability is coming to Google AI Ultra subscribers in Project Genie and early-access partners in the Gemini API and Google AI Studio. The preview announcement does not give every subscriber or developer immediate access. Developer explanation

1. What comes after the action I change?
Here, a world is an environment of objects, space and movement, rather than the whole planet. Playing a saved video shows the next image already recorded. An interactive world model generates the next scene in response to a user’s movement or instruction.
Consider asking only for rain in the same harbor. The fictional illustration below keeps the composition and objects while changing weather and sound. After seeing the result, the user can move again or request another condition.
Before · a clear harbor
A pier, boat and person in the scene
Example sound: gentle waves
User request: “Make it rain in the same harbor”
After · a rainy harbor
The same pier, boat and person, with rain and a wet surface
Example sound: rain added to the waves
Check whether objects and sound continue when weather changes. This illustration promises no successful output; the model has limits in object, spatial and audio consistency.

What could change for someone planning a video?
Pocket NotebookThe proposed use is to compare ideas by changing a camera direction or weather while viewing a scene. Google lists creative tools for filmmaking and gaming among possible applications. That is not a promise to produce an entire finished film or game in one step.
2. The new emphasis is the connection between sound and scene
DeepMind published recordings of interactions using keyboard navigation and camera controls, with text prompts changing the scene as it evolves. It describes real-time environmental sound and character dialogue, and says Gemini-family models help maintain context and progression. These are developer demonstrations, not results from our own execution of the model.
| Change to examine | Familiar example | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Editing an ongoing scene | Change weather while walking | Whether existing objects continue coherently along with the changed background |
| Sound generated with the scene | Wind or waves | Whether sound matches events on screen |
| Character reactions and dialogue | Introduce a character and speak | Whether the response fits the request and context |

Does a natural-looking demo prove accurate real-world physics?
Pocket NotebookAppearance alone does not establish physical accuracy. The developers list complex physical interactions and spatial and audio accuracy as ongoing research areas. Real safety decisions require separate validation.
3. Who can try it, and what remains uncertain?
Project Genie is a product for creating and exploring virtual worlds. The Gemini API and Google AI Studio are routes for developers to connect models to applications or test them. This announcement describes gathering limited-tester feedback before wider availability; these originals do not specify final pricing or access dates for every region.

The developers say object appearance and positions can drift, and objects may fail to persist as simulations run longer or undergo repeated complex edits. Legible text, spatial accuracy and long-term consistency also remain limitations. Exploring a film idea and validating safe behavior for a real robot therefore require different levels of accuracy checks.

Once I have access, what could I compare without coding?
Pocket NotebookChange one condition in the same scene and inspect continuity of objects, sound and reactions. For instance, does asking only for rain also change the people and location without reason? This is a small creative exploration, not certification of real-world safety.

Choose the next action after seeing its result
Genie 4’s proposed change is an experience where scenes and sound keep being generated in response to user action. Once access is available, comparing the connection before and after one action offers a concrete starting point. Judge possible uses alongside access conditions and longer-session consistency, as well as the impression a demo creates.
