Population Simulator Launch - Visualizing the Fertility Crisis
Launched Population Simulator, visualizing the global fertility crisis. 31 countries' fertility rates at a glance on a 3D globe.
Every time I saw "Korea's fertility rate: 0.72" in the news, the number didn't feel real. So I decided to visualize it myself.
๐ก Background
Every time I see news about Korea's birth rate, it's just numbers and it doesn't hit you. I wanted to visually show just how serious 0.72 is by comparing it with other countries.
๐ ๏ธ What's In It
Built the 3D globe with Three.js. WebGL-based so it runs fine on desktop, but frames drop on mobile. Rendering 31 countries simultaneously has inherent limits. Needs optimization, but haven't gotten to it yet.
๐ What I Felt Putting the Data Together
Korea at 0.72, #1 in the world... #2 Hong Kong (0.77), #3 Singapore (0.85). Based on UN Population Data 2024. Knowing the numbers and actually lining up 31 countries side by side are different things. Run the 100-year simulation and there are tons of countries where the population drops below half. Putting the data together was honestly a bit heavy.
๐ฐ Revenue? No Idea
Didn't build this to make money. Just wanted to make it. Could slap AdSense on it, but more than that, I hope people see this data and feel the weight of reality a little.
